SHANDON, San Luis Obispo County — A library in the rural eastern part of the county has offered more than ordinary books. San Luis Obispo County Public Libraries launched a tool-lending program designed to help residents with home repairs, gardening and other projects.
How the program started
In 2022 the county announced a $23,000 California Sustainable Libraries grant to build a collection in Shandon. At its April 2023 unveiling, the agency described a collection of more than 50 types of tools, including saws, air compressors, wet/dry vacuums, hedge trimmers, wheelbarrows and drills.
Why Shandon is different
Households in Shandon may otherwise travel a considerable distance for tools that are only needed once or twice a year. A shared collection can reduce purchase costs, storage requirements and some unnecessary trips. But a historic program launch does not guarantee a specific tool is available today.
Before borrowing equipment
Contact SLO County Public Libraries to ask about branch hours, library-card eligibility, checkout duration, safety procedures and the current tool inventory. Check the power source and protective equipment requirements before using borrowed machinery.

The county health department’s NaloxBox listing identifies the Shandon Library at 195 North Second Street among public naloxone access locations. Hours and availability should be confirmed directly. Naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose, but always call emergency services immediately when an overdose is suspected.
